Auto-deleting old replies in 3DS friend code exchange

@GamersInternatio and I have been thinking about this recently, and we wanted to get some thoughts on it.

Proposal

We could set a timer in the 3ds friend code sharing topic that would automatically delete all replies that are older than a certain amount of time.

Pros

  • This would help get rid of stale friend codes from people who are not actively checking the topic for replies and adding people back.
  • Keeps the topic smaller and more manageable. I doubt anyone is actually looking at the middle 900 replies in a 1000-reply topic anyway.
  • Topics have a 10,000-reply limit, and this would effectively prevent that limit from being reached.

Cons

  • If you are actively looking for friends, you’ll have to repost your friend code.

Poll

Closes at midnight tomorrow.

What do you think about auto-deleting replies?
  • No, don’t delete replies
  • Yes, after a long time (2-3 months)
  • Yes, after a medium time (1 month)
  • Yes, after a short time (1-2 weeks)
  • Unsure/I don’t care either way

If you have any other thoughts, please leave a reply here!

I should also add in that the matchmaking category on Discord deletes threads after 6 hours of inactivity.

(thanks for correcting me lol)

Currently closes and locks, not deletes

A little surprised at the timescale, but I’m used to everything being instant I suppose.
1-2 weeks sounds pretty reasonable, though part of me wonders if the shortish timeframe could even be 3. Though that might be a uncomfortable middle ground

Oh yeah, I was just reminded that we’re also planning this for 3DS Friend Code Whitelisting for Testing Servers. I didn’t make a poll for that because keeping old friend codes around is obviously useless once they’re whitelisted (and for archival/logging purposes, moderators can see deleted posts).

I think that there should just be a filter of recently posted/ most liked and delete stuff every 6 months

Thank you everyone for voting! I see 1-2 weeks was the most popular option here, will wait for Matthew to acknowledge this before taking any action.

Thanks for voting! I see that there was a unanimous decision in favor of deleting replies, with 1-2 weeks being ahead by 1 vote. Since the vote was so close, I’ve set the auto-delete timer to the upper end of the range at 2 weeks.

I’ve also set the auto-delete timer for the friend code whitelisting topic to 2 days, as whitelist requests generally get resolved quickly.
