Why is adding friends on 3DS a lot harder than Wii U

I’ve seen a difference between 3DS friend codes and Wii U friend codes. Why is 3DS friend codes numbers while Wii U only needs your PNID?

i believe this was because Nintendo thought it was best since you could easily add strangers if friend codes wasn’t a thing. the 3DS also had SpotPass, and Miiverse, which allowed to share user-created content to others or directly to someone you didn’t know, which could raise security concerns for parents. (cough cough swapnote)

since the Wii U was a home console, and parents could theoretically see what you do if your not using Off-Screen Play, adding people was much easier.

Actually, users under 13 had a similar system to Friend Codes on Nintendo Network. Both users had to insert each other’s NNID. Pretendo doesn’t implement this due to being a 13+ service.

I genuinely had no idea that was even a thing on Nintendo Network.

Yeah it was a thing. It was easily bypassable though because you could just say to someone “hey I’ll add your NNID, please add mine” (although Miiverse mods would get mad at that).
