Pretendo seems to be changing my NAT type?

The 118-0006 is gone now but Splatoon still doesn’t work for me. I tried both standard and opening a private lobby but I’m getting a communication error now. Other people here are saying that it’s working for them so I don’t know for sure whether that’s a related issue or not

Can you check your NAT type?

Ok, so I just wanted to test for my NAT Type but now I actually can’t connect through Pretendo at all anymore it seems. I’m suddenly getting a 103-2007 error. I’ve tested the internet connection without Pretendo and that does work, so it doesn’t seem like it’s something on my end. Oh also, it seems I have NAT Type B, so it should be fine, right?

Oh actually, it suddenly starting working through Pretendo again as well and it seems the NAT Type is different there (wasn’t aware of this). It doesn’t quite match any of the code patterns listed, but it’s pretty close to Type F. The code is 002-99

Yeah probably still type F if you tested it on a Switch or something

Nope, it’s B on my switch and also as I said before it’s also B on the Wii U when not using Pretendo. When using Pretendo it shows that 002-99 code on the test but Pretendo shouldn’t change anything about the NAT Type, no?

It shouldn’t change anything about the NAT type but I’m not sure?

It definitely seems weird. Is there anyone here that knows a bit more about networking and what Pretendo does to the connection so that we can maybe figure out what’s the issue here?

I’m going to split off your post in a separate thread and ask about it because I’ve never heard about this happening before.

Is this on Inkay or SSSL by the way?

Okay. It’s SSSL (my Wii U is still stock / not modded)

That’s the ISP. Some ISPs block the DNS redirection entirely, or “allow” it but completely restrict it.

It’s not Pretendo.

If you want to avoid it, you need to try a mobile hotspot or something, or even modding. http://wiiu.guide/

Ok, I figured it out. It took quite some digging and trial and error but I can confirm it’s not actually an ISP thing. The actual issue is that I didn’t set a secondary DNS but that seems to be necessary. I didn’t set one because the guide said it’s optional and only for fallback but that seems to be wrong? The guide should probably be updated

I’m not sure why this is required but my guess would be that Pretendo still relies on some websites which Nintendo still maintains that Pretendo doesn’t replace. Could be wrong with that though

Very weird. The guide used to say to enter a secondary DNS.

Oh ok. I don’t know if you have the authority to change that, but it would be good if you could do that or talk with someone who can

It is not necessary in most cases, and is optional. The fact that you seem to require one is the odd thing. The guide cannot possibly account for all users network setups, and most people can use SSSL (which, to be honest, you should only really be using if you HAVE to) without a secondary DNS. In fact we almost did not even include any instructions about a secondary DNS since in most cases “secondary DNS” is not actually a fallback for missing records, it’s used as a redundancy, and we were not sure if the Wii U also uses it as just redundancy or as a real fallback. The guide does not need to be updated, since trying to cover every possible edge case would just lead to bloat

Oh, I see. I thought this was an issue for everyone since a friend of mine who lives in a different country with a totally different network setup also seemed to have the same issue (NAT Type seemingly being F without secondary DNS but with it being A or B)

In the end it’s of course up to you to decide how to handle this but I think that at least a note that states that not setting the secondary DNS sometimes causes issues could be helpful. But again if you think differently, I will obviously respect that
