Juxtaposition release #450: 3DS screenshots, people feed & DM sunset

Hey all,
Today’s Juxtaposition update is a big one, we’ve put a lot of effort into it. So I hope you’ll enjoy it!

Screenshots & other posting updates on 3DS - By ashquarky in #406 and #403

You can now post screenshots on Juxtaposition with your 3DS!
Just like on Wii U, you can select the screens of whichever game is running to attach them to your post.
Also, we’ve reorganized the posting layout, and the top screen will now show the banner of the community you’re posting to!

As a part of this, we’ve implemented some changes to how screenshot uploads work on Juxtaposition. For a given title, you’ll now be able to upload images only to its associated community. If you have Mario Kart 7 open, the screenshot button will only appear in the Mario Kart 7 community. This change was needed so we could disable screenshots for certain titles (e.g. ones that use the 3DS camera).

For games that do not have Juxtaposition communities yet, we have added them to similar communities - e.g. all the Puyo Puyo games in the Puyo Puyo Tetris community. If we missed any similar games, please send us your suggestions!

New People Feed - By ashquarky in #423

We’ve added a new feature to the Activity Feed across all platforms (Wii U, 3DS, and Web) called the People Feed. Following large communities like the Homebrew Community can clog up your Feed, so the People Feed only shows posts from the people you’re following, and not your followed communities.
You can use this to catch up with your friends’ posts, or you could follow artists you like in the Art Community to have a personalized art feed!

Sunsetting Direct Messages

We’ve had growing social and legal concerns, both internally and externally, that moderation for Direct Messages (DMs) is needed. However, the heavy privacy implications of what having to moderate DMs actually entails are a lot for us to have to manage ourselves; we can’t just look through people’s messages, nor do we want to.

As a result of this, we’ve recognized that we aren’t going to feasibly be able to moderate DMs, and so we have made the difficult decision to begin sunsetting the feature on 2026-04-04T11:00:00Z.
The sunsetting process will be done in waves:

  • 2026-04-04T11:00:00Z DMs will be turned read-only for users. You will be able to export your DMs in this time period.
  • 2026-04-18T11:00:00Z The database will be scrubbed of all DMs. DMs will no longer be able to be exported, and the respective tab in the Juxtaposition user interface will be removed and replaced.

Should things change, the feature may return at some future date; however, it is not in our roadmap.
The functionality will remain in-game to keep certain games functional, and for the API to remain an accurate implementation of the original.

We apologize for having to sunset direct messages, but we hope you will continue to enjoy Juxtaposition.

Improved localisation - By mrjvs in #400 and #413

In the previous update, we’ve updated our translation code to use i18next. This allows for more flexibility in translation.
Now, this flexibility has been made use of:

  • Data inside sentences can now be reordered per language. Not all languages have the same sentence structure, so this will allow for more fluent translations.
  • All interface text in the Juxtaposition can now be translated.

Smaller updates:

  • Collapsible sections on moderation pages use the correct icon rotation - #445 by Joshua8600
  • Communities can now have images disabled for some communities (Kid Icarus: Uprising on original Miiverse had this) - #403 by ashquarky
  • Fixed a bug where it says “[Object object]” when pressing the follow button - #434 by mrjvs
  • Fixed a bug where a newline counted as 2 characters instead of 1 causing “Unprocessable Entity” errors - #406 by ashquarky
  • Made all tabs consistency sized and widen them on 3DS - #423 by ashquarky
  • Fixed 3DS follow button not showing as highlighted even when you’ve followed - #406 by ashquarky
  • Community page now loads again when not logged in - #452 by ashquarky
  • Added internal metrics for how many posts get posted - #452 by ashquarky

That is all!
If you like the changelogs like this make sure to let us know. Any suggestions to improve the changelog posts are very appreciated!

And with this release we got some new communities! Couldn’t have done these without the hard work of @ImoraPNID, @PN_quarky, and @mistrjvs (and myself @Joshua8600PNID did help a bit here too but the ones before me did most of the work)!

  1. Cloudberry Kingdom (a personal request of mine, I love this game!)
  2. New Super Mario Bros. 2
  3. Super Mario 3D Land
  4. Virtual Console Community - Wii U
  5. Virtual Console Community - 3DS

Hope you all enjoy!

I love what you’re doing to improve Juxt, but disabling direct messages?

I’ve been using them since they became available and I’ve never had any problems. There are people like me who don’t overuse direct messages, and this makes me a little sad because I use them a lot.

But thanks anyway.

I completely get being upset over it and I didn’t want them to be removed personally, but the safety of users are at our utmost priority. The team recommends looking into alternative platforms like Discord or Signal for continuing to chat with other users, these platforms have better safeguards for users.

Are Forum DMs being disabled?

I think that they already are disabled except for ticket DMs? You can try sending me a DM to see if it goes through, I genuinely don’t know rn

This is a fantastic update and DMs being discontinued is sad but understandable. The only issue I have is how am I gonna reach out to ppl now since I don’t have discord.

I’d recommend Signal, it’s quite private and secure. You do need a phone number to get it set up, but you can give people your username when you get it set up.

Is it a Wii U thing or 3DS? Tell me more abt jt

It is not a 3DS or WiiU thing. Signal is an end-to-end encrypted messaging platform, similar to WhatsApp.

I do hope this is the proper place to make a request of this manner, and I’m not all too sure if this is possible since this is a homebrew title; but I would appreciate if uploading screenshots of Sonic Mania (as well as other Sonic games that may not have the feature) on posts is ever on the table.

dammit why did i have to break my 2ds now

more cramped features for my cramped 2ds /j

Thank you for the hard work - I’ve moderated communities with over 2M members and know how crazy it gets. Salute

Finally, we can upload images on 3DS! But restrictions of upload them only on certain communities really made me sad, since there are still many games doesn’t have their own communities on Juxt yet

Yeah, it was a compromise we had to make due to how many 3DS titles both use the camera and predate Miiverse (-> don’t have proper capture enable/disable checks around the camera feature).
We are hoping to keep adding communities to Juxt over time to make this less of an issue. ^^
