Is there any other way to communicate except the crappy status system on friends?
Not really? The 3DS was never really meant to be able to send messages. I guess there was SwapNote (which does NOT work on Pretendo SPR because Nintendo disabled that software) or Swapdoodle (which is in development) but as far as I know, there is nothing else.
