Animal Crossing: New Leaf unavailable due to exploit

Hey everyone! We have received reports of the possible existence of an RCE exploit on ACNL.

We have decided to take the server down to prevent any damage.

We want to make clear that this is an exploit caused on the game side, not by our servers - our servers are not affected by this.

We are currently working on a patch which fixes this issue, just like we have done in the past for Mario Kart 8 and Splatoon (see rce_patches) so we can restore the servers as soon as possible. Keep in mind that it may be mandatory to install these patches when the server is back online.

For the sake of users who aren’t familiar with what Remote Code Execution is, here’s a quick explanation:

Remote Code Execution allows other users to potentially run code on your console, unauthorised by you.

Good move. We don’t want to be exposed to serious exploits. Thanks devs for letting us know and giving us more transparency! Hope a fix can be made quickly!

Bruuuuuuhhhhh I just set up Pretendo for the first time to play ACNL. Hopefully it gets sorted out soon. I can’t wait to try this out

it’s fine that sucks tho

So… basically they’re playing a modded version of the game? Even though connecting to the Pretendo server itself is just a form of hacking your console?

My ACNL is appearing “this online service is no longer available,” but it’s strange, because I’m playing Mario Kart, I can add friends and play other online games, but only ACNL is having this mistake when I’m going to open my train station for visits, and yesterday everything was normal. But now I got it… totaly!

The server has been indefinitely taken completely offline while this potential exploit is being investigated.

It’s showing that error because the server does not currently “exist” on the network anymore as a precaution while things are investigated.

An RCE (Remote Code Execution) exploit is some typa security vulnerability that allows a hacker to execute arbitary code on a remote system without the user’s knowing. This can lead to unauthorized access, data theft, or even full system control.
Like Animal Crossing: New Leaf the RCE exploit could potentially allow hackers to run malicious code on a player’s system, compromising their game data or personal information. (If anyones confused i also just found out what rce means) but in a nutshell: hacker. Hacker has good braincells. Hacker has bad code and executes it in game. Code can break game and fuck up your save data and other stuff. Bad. I mean i’d prefer not some hacker fella saying my full ip adress in the chat and as long as the maintenance on acnl doesnt take ages than its fine :']

I thought the problem in my 3ds was because I activated Spotpass, after all by coincidence after I activated Spotpass the error occurred in ACNL hehehe.

This is why Minecraft is Friends Only on Wii U.

Due to RCE exploits.

Could someone actually find out your ip adress via your wii u?

Yes, but that is not because of RCE.

That is because the 3DS and Wii U use “peer-to-peer (P2P)” networking.

Anyone’s IP is exposed on a P2P system. That’s just how it is.

OHHHHHHHH… like, the exact location of your wii u or just the routers location that it is connecting to??? Cuz my router is connecting to berlin, would the hacker only see where my router is connecting to or my wii u’s exact location

That gets a little more tricky. It depends on the internet infrastructure in general.

Most likely just your approximate location, so it would be Berlin. Sometimes it’s the same area (like broadband IPs are for me) and other times it’s the other side of the country (like mobile IPs).
