2ds/3ds home screen theme editing

This afternoon, I tried scanning a QR code with my 2DS (for reference, it’s a New Nintendo 2DS XL) to try and get this custom theme of the first Pokémon movie on the site Themes | Theme Plaza, but it was just permanently “Searching for QR Code”. I made sure the frame on my 2DS lined up with the code on the laptop I’m typing this from (my old one was broken), but the code on the site just wasn’t registering with my 2DS at all. I want to be able to get a whole lot of cool Pokémon themes from the site, but if my console isn’t registering, then what’s going on? Please help!

This isn’t a Pretendo issue.

However, I think I might have an answer. You should have an option to download the theme as a ZIP file and I believe you can put the ZIP file somewhere on your 3DS (it’s been a while so I don’t remember the process exactly).

If you need any more assistance with this or another non Pretendo related query, please use GBAtemp or the Nintendo Homebrew Discord server.

To add, they go under sd:/themes. Also, @darknerjester42, make sure your console’s camera lens isn’t dirty. If there’s a smudge on it, it can interfere with QR codes.

Thanks! Though… when I try to access the site on my 2DS’s Internet Browser (and I CAN), and I try to download the theme by going to it and tapping “Download” with my stylus, it just won’t LET me do it. I don’t get it.

…the lens? I hadn’t actually thought about that. Thanks!

You can’t download files with the 3DS browser. You’ll have to use a PC or phone to transfer the ZIP to your SD. Install ftpd to make this easier. There’s plenty of FTP clients for both mobile and desktop.

Sorry to reply to one of my old posts like this, but I was just wondering if that file could ALSO be downloaded via the console’s Internet Browser.

Unfortunately not, but I’m pretty sure you can get it on Universal Updater.

Edit: I might have misunderstood. If you’re talking about ftpd, then that’s right. If you’re talking about themes, you need to scan the QR code inside Anenome3DS.

There’s a QR for ftpd, as well. It’s further down on the Git page. But yeah, Universal Updater will probably be the simplest way if OP’s camera has been acting wonky.

It’s all a bit complicated and confusing to me.

I’ll try checking if the lens is dirty first.

Wait, is your 3DS modded yet? You were still unmodded the last time I checked right?

Yes, that’s correct. Hold on, you mean one can download new themes from various sites when a console is unmodded, right?

Oh, well that explains the whole issue. No, modding is absolutely required to download third-party themes. Without modding, all you can do is download themes you previously bought from the eShop.

Hmm. I see. So it’s not that simple, then.

And it’s also not just a case of “sitting in a bright room with the 2DS’s camera lens fairly clean”, either.
