What's your favorite botw shrine/shrine quest?

What’s your favorite shrine/shrine quest in botw? Just say the shrine (and trial) and/or your favorite shrine quest. I’ll start, mine is Kaam Ya’tak Shrine (Trial of Power), and my favorite shrine quest is Stranded on Eventide Island. But honestly, the blood moon shrine is annoying.

None because I very much dislike Breath of the Wild.

I can write a mini-essay on why I dislike BotW.

I have spoken about it ad nauseam in the Pretendo Discord VC that so many people can probably recite my reasons verbatim at this point. :rofl:

I dislike breath of the wild reason 1: weapon durability pretty simple
Reason 2: The story
Reason 3: random rain i will be running around climbing and boom i slipped
Reason 4: performance issues it struggles to barely even maintain 30 fps on both wii u and switch
Reason 5: Lack of dungeons the shrines are just meh
Reason 6: theres not enough variety in rewards for exploration

I’ve done so many I’ve lost count. I don’t play BOTW anymore, but i still have it on that one USB. Been playing since i think April of 2017.

Alright, I’ve delayed this enough.

  1. Story:

Honestly, I think the story of this game is alright, just a little boring. Because the world has been in peril for 100 years, the atmosphere is so dull and lifeless compared to most other Zelda games, which also means character interactions and plot points are going to feel the same. I thought the only real interesting bit was the history between Link and Mipha; otherwise, I just don’t care about anything the game has to tell me.

  1. (Lack of) Dungeons:

One of my biggest issues with this game. Rather than having uniquely-designed dungeons offering a variety of puzzles, aesthetics, or a chance for the creativity to shine - we instead get the Divine Beats and the Shrines. And they all look the same. They all feel the same. The are the same. I will admit there were some interesting puzzles, but there was a lot of repetition and a lot of BS as well (looking at you, gyro-controlled ball mazes). The core of the game is bland and the most off-putting part of this game.

  1. (Lack of) Unique Dungeon/Progression Items:

This ties back into item (2) - The lack of variety. Zelda is known for its innovating (and recurring!) items that offer new combat or exploration scenarios. In Breath of the Wild, however, we instead get the Runes at the very start of the game. Sure, there are different kinds of weapons and food and armor, but those don’t offer much in terms of just changing the way you view the world you’re in. It’s just disappointing, really, as a world this big could really have used some variety to shake things up.

  1. Music:

I dislike the music a lot in this game. It’s too atmospheric, too fleeting, too forgetful. I am someone with an uncommon view that there is a lot of bad Zelda music in general, but I do still think there is so much great Zelda music (OoT’s Hyrule Field, MM’s Clock Town, TWW’s Windfall Island, SS’s Earth Temple, TP’s Hyrule Field) that just completely overshadow this game’s soundtrack. It is wonderfully composed, but it is not the kind of music that fits in an action-adventure-puzzle title.

  1. Lack of reward for the arduous quest:

Let me take a moment to talk about some other Zelda games: OoT has the Biggoron Sword. MM has the Fierce Deity’s Mask. WW has a shiny new special figurine and a letter. Skyward Sword has the Tycoon Wallet. Twilight Princess has infinite money. With Minish Cap, despite giving a useless reward, at least it isn’t a giant piece of poop. All Zelda games have their game-long sidequest, and BotW is the worst offender with Hestu’s Gift. Now, none of these rewards have ever been that good - but they have always been something. For Breath of the Wild to throw that away and instead just laugh at the player, really irks me as a Zelda fan for over 20 years. It’s a bad joke at its best, and just an insult at its worst.

  1. Lack of a reason for the open world:

Item (5) feeds directly into this. Why do the Koroks exist? To give some purpose to exploring this big empty world. Because all there else is are the monster chests with more breakable weapons, so there is no point in destroying your weapons to just get more that will break. Koroks exist just to give something to do in this otherwise needlessly-big world with nothing in it. This is one of the worst examples of an open world I have seen in a game in quite a few years, because it isn’t just formulaic; it is empty.

  1. Effect on the timeline:

My most minor complaint about this game, but it is still worth mentioning. Something I personally liked about the Zelda timeline was how different things went depending on what version of OoT’s ending you go from. It allowed so much flexibility in telling a new story with a whole new environment. But in Breath of the Wild, it is the inevitable result in every timeline. SO why should we care about any of the split timelines before it? If we know this is how no matter what the land of Hyrule is destined to end up? It ruins the mystery and the magic of each game’s individual world, in my opinion.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, I have many problems with this game. I don’t mind the runes or the weapon durability on their own. I think the food and elements/survival system is pretty neat! But the overall game structure and the gameplay loop that is supposed to engage us just isn’t there, as it just feels half-baked and shoe-horned in for the “open world” craze of the late 2010’s.

You’ve got some valid points, botw is my first zelda game (and I will play alot more zelda games) so I don’t really have the same complaints as you. The soundtrack is pretty good imo, two of my biggest complaints is the lack of a post game and lack of a story. I was really hoping for link to be able to talk to zelda, and also help rebuild hyrule castle (like how you can help build tarrey town), and some changed npc dialouge. But instead, we just get sent to right before we killed ganon with very minor changes. The story is just alright, not much depth in it or depth on the champions. The story is basically “Free the 4 divine beasts and then go kill calamity ganon”. But honestly I like the open world concept, a great game imo.

The game could have been better. There are a lot of cool ideas, but with everything that I listed it just doesn’t feel like a well-thought out Zelda game, but instead another game that they turned into a Zelda game later.

You do have some great points there. Especially the dungeons situation, I do believe that creativity was kind of “forgotten” in the game, though I really enjoy the extra content that can be received in the game. E.g. DLC, Clothing, Cooking, etc. I find that aspect really interesting, how the game never “ends” it just repeats, though some dislike the lack of satisfaction that it delivers.

I think Nintendo wanted to try something new, some liked it, some didn’t.

I think Nintendo tried too hard to appeal to more hardcore gamers and “open-world” style of games that they forgot what made Zelda, Zelda.
