A new and an old 3DS XL. The New one is metallic black and suffers from deep freezing (constant freezing, no hacks) and a broken screen, so I resorted to using my old system which is blue andcannot display 3D images (because the depth slider isn’t working).
I did that, worked just fine, though my N3DSXL(Black) was stolen 3 months later, maybe by Nintendo Ninjas.

Solgaleo and lunala edition nn3dsxl, had to swap out motherboard, its a long story.
We have the same model, except mine’s the XL. I actually want to do a swap for mine, too. Was thinking of going with this since the black against red would probably look really cool.
It’s also really hard to find shells for XLs. I bought a red LL shell off of eBay around a month ago, but it came in broken, so I’m very wary of eBay now when it comes to these.

Old 3DS XL, trust me when I say that it’s painful to constantly have to wait for the console to reboot to extended memory mode when I launch games like CTGP-7.
I also own the separate amiibo reader.
I don’t think it goes into extended memory mode for CTGP-7? I have one too and I think the only game it goes into it for is SMM3DS (although I hardly play that game so might be misremembering)
Old CTGP-7 (v1.3) didn’t use extended memory mode, v1.4 and up started requiring it.
I’d have to check but I don’t think it enters extended memory mode for me on my old 3DS XL.
Doesn’t SSB also use it? I seem to remember there being some kind of difference between running it on an O3DS and an N3DS.

but oof thanks for the heads up, I was looking at eBay too, I wanted a pikachu one, but they’re sold out everywhere. I settled for a silver one but haven’t bought it just yet. I see comments here and there that it doesn’t fit perfectly. And I’m a tad hesitant too.
The black and red combo will look awesome though!
Started with the OoT Remake special edition OG 3ds back in 2011. I still have it and it isn’t modded but I upgraded to a New 3ds XL Hyrule Edition in 2014 and I’ve been using that ever since. I only just modded it in November to bring it new life.
Taking care of it has saved me so much money as I got it as a christmas gift a decade ago now.
