Because port overriding can be a gate for hackers
I’m not sure I can guarantee it’s 100% safe, but it’s safer than not locking to a certain port (since you can just forward one port or something instead of a whole range).
Commonly, yes! Just don’t do it If you don’t know what you are doing, if you have WPA 2 to 3 protection you are 99.95% safe.
The security settings on your WiFi network aren’t going to make any difference to whether locking to a specific port is safe
From the BOINC (distributed computing) rules and policies, which I personally think apply to anything on the internet. (The first part is primarily what applies about “taking a chance”)
ARRRRGGHHHH, I always manage to misread a question, write a reply and leave without rereading it I’m very sorry, you would be right. WPA Is only local protection. Whoops.
Let’s assume you’re talking about having a certain UDP port forwarded to your Wii U, as you can do with the latest Inkay build and Cemu packs.
Consider that if someone is in a game with you, they can already send you packets due to NAT holepunching, so we will only consider attackers that are not currently playing a game with you. Such a hacker would have to predict:
- Your public IP address
- The port number in use (remember this is different for every console)
- The times of day in which your Wii U is turned on and connected to the internet
- The times of day in which you have a game or application running that actually listens on the port (for most titles this is only when you’re actively playing multiplayer)
The odds of them hitting all of these - especially predicting your IP - are astronomically low; not to mention that no actual exploit where a random packet can exploit your console is known. (All the known exploits require being in a multiplayer game with the victim, at which point port forwarding is irrelevant due to NAT holepunching.)
