I meant, which of the two were you on.

Because a 3DS requires an SD card for Pretendo, as the system needs to be modded.

On a Wii U, you can actually use it hackless: https://pretendo.network/docs/install/wiiu#sssl

Note: The DNS redirection might not work (some ISPs just full-on block it). If that happens, try using a mobile hotspot for internet. If that doesn’t work either, the only other way is modding (which needs an SD card).
